For a minute or two….

The news of forthcoming exhibit in New York, The View from a Volcano, The Kitchen’s Soho Years, 1971 – 1985, which features the work of photographer Kathy Landman (you can see her work via the http://www.chisholmgallery.com , well, it took me back in a second to the Year of Our Lord 1984, wearing black German tights, Esprit woven sandals, tiger eye earrings and necklace from Africa, bright yellow silk tunics as dresses and dancing, dancing, dancing the night away with the hipsters of my youth to The Talking Heads, obsessing over Warhol and Basquiat.

I was a young reporter then, working for Knight-Ridder and the Associated Press, out every night on the town writing about culture (ballet, Baryshnikov, Nureyev, everyone from the Talking Heads to Tchaikovsky for South Carolina’s capital city and, further afield, the Spoleto Festival in Charleston.  I stood in line for everything from Ming Dynasty porcelains to a private collector’s viewing of the Shot Marilyn.  Hearing of this exhibit made me feel young, opening a bottle of wine and just dreaming, dreaming, dreaming of the dreams of my youth (not so far away, still close enough to taste, as it were).

The world has taken me so many places since then.  I’ve seen ones I’ve loved die in ways both serene and painful.  I’ve stood at the base of some of the highest mountains in the world, in drawing rooms with kings, in mud huts with paupers, on farms and in palaces, in the temples of the mind and of the heart.

So, I hope you’ll go down to this exhibit if you’re in New York.  And, where ever you are, and whatever age you are, I hope you’ll reach back to the art of your youth.  It’s still with you.  Grab it and make it your own.

Tonight I’ll drink a toast to the friends of my youth, to our endless energy and enthusiasm, to the creative process that still throbs through all of us, whether we see it or not.  To quote David Byrne, “I’m just an animal, looking for a moment, sharing this space for a minute or two.  Hope you’ll love me still my heart stops, hope you’ll love me till I’m dead.”

Amen to that.  And love to you all.

Our friend Jeanne Chisholm of The Chisholm Gallery (www.chisholmgallery.com) sent along this beautiful painting  by French artist Frederique Lavergne, Tent Pegging in Pakistan.  You may remember the video of tent pegging at Lahore Polo Club a few months ago and we feel that this image captures the real thing.

Beautiful!
